Vehicle Registration

Before registering a vehicle, new residents first must acquire automobile insurance. Proof of insurance is required to register a vehicle. The state of Florida requires that after 90 days of legal residency, vehicles are to be covered by PIP and property damage insurance.

Vehicles must be registered before a driver’s license may be granted. To register a vehicle, proof of ownership, title, vehicle identification number, odometer reading and valid automobile insurance are required.

Driver’s License: New residents only need to pass a visual examination if they already have a valid driver’s license from another state. A Florida license is valid for six years. Applicants must present proof of vehicle registration, out-of-state driver’s license and social security card.

Seat Belt Law

Florida law requires all front seat occupants in cars, pickup trucks and vans operating on Florida roads to be restrained with seat belts. All children under the age of six must be in seat belts no matter where they ride in the vehicle. Children through the age of three must be secured by a federally approved child restraint seat.
